Universidad Autónoma Chapingo students visit Agroindustrias Tombell facilities

Recognizing the significant role played by the agricultural sector in Mexico, from January 29th to February 1st, students from the Agroindustrial Engineering program at the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo visited the Agroindustrias Tombell packing house.

For Agroindustrias Tombell, a member of our Veggies from Mexico community, it is valuable for the students to know the importance of the agricultural industry in Mexico and to value all the work that is behind the consumption of vegetables and to know the opportunities that exist in the labor market since they will be the future professionals who will develop agriculture in Mexico.

During this visit, the students had the opportunity to learn about the post-harvest handling of tomatoes and to discover all the technology involved in the process. They also learned how the tomatoes are delivered from the field to the packinghouse and how quality sampling is carried out, such as checking the size and color of the tomatoes.

They also visited the ripening room and the controls are carried out for the ripening of the product. During the tour, they also had the opportunity to see the packaging and palletizing area, processes that ensure that the product is delivered in perfect condition to the supermarkets.

In addition, the students were told about good manufacturing practices, how important they are for tomato post-harvest handling, and how the company obtained food safety certifications through them.

At the end of the visit, the students visited the cold room and explained the temperature conditions in which the product must be kept and how it is shipped in the trucks to its destination.

The Agroindustrias Tombell team was represented by: Mr. Hipolito Alejandro Alvarez Hernandez, Head of Quality and Food Safety, Mr. Gilberto Vargas, Head of Packaging, Ms. Miriam Prado, Food Safety and Safety Supervisor, Ms. Asencion Meza, Head of Shipping, Mr. Juan Carlos Rocha, Line Manager and Ms. Wendy Chaidez, Ms. Mayra Leyva, and Ms. Rosa Amelia Alvarez from the quality team.
