MEXICO – Like many shoppers in your store, my sights are set on the oncoming summer. The season brings the perfect weather for the beach, picnic, and outdoor BBQs. As such, quality produce is on the mind. I turn to Georgius Gotsis, Chief Executive Officer of Veggies From Mexico, to get a read on Mexico’s latest season and what we can look forward to.
“Our Sinaloa season is now over, and the last of the tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are being harvested in greenhouses and shade nets,” Georgius tells me. “The open-field crops ended a few weeks ago, and I’m happy to say it was a good season from a volume and market standpoint.” With the close of the Sinaloa season, Georgius confirms that farmers are already looking ahead to the 2023–2024 season.
“Members are working on preparing the soil for the next season. The growers are also in the planning process, as the pre-contracting of their veggies is essential to make decisions regarding the hectares that they will be planting in a couple of months,” Georgius explains. “They are also taking advantage of the summer to take a well-deserved vacation, in addition to taking training in food safety, social responsibility, and sustainability.”
