Know more about Veggies From Mexico: Medical Care for Workers
Agricultural companies in our state depend on many workers to carry out the production and packing of fruits and vegetables. Workers play an indispensable and fundamental role in the production of food that meets the highest standards of quality and safety in the food industry; that is why the companies affiliated with our community seek to provide workers with better working and living conditions for them and their families by offering them adequate medical care.
To protect the health of workers and their families, we promote preventive medicine actions based on the strategy of prevention and health promotion in the lifeline of the essential measures of prevention and health promotion in the different stages of life: childhood, adolescence, youth, maturity, and senescence. This strategy is only based on basic actions to prevent diseases and promote self-care of people’s health according to their age and sex, through the implementation of the program of prevention and health promotion measures.
Medical care for workers and their families is provided by medical teams directly hired by the company or, where applicable, those assigned by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to the company’s medical offices. In addition, the company has the support of the Ministry of Health to promote, in a coordinated manner, the timely detection of diseases and preventive medicine for workers.
It is guaranteed that workers and their families have access to first-level medical services by the provisions of the Federal Labor Law, which establishes:
→ Keep in the workplace the medicines and healing material necessary for first aid and qualified personnel are available to provide them.
→ Ensure that medical assistance is provided to workers and their families or, if not available on-site, transfer them to the nearest place where medical services are available.
Companies that have shelters must guarantee free of charge the service of transferring workers and their families in case of medical emergencies, occupational hazards, and illnesses to family medicine units, clinics, or hospitals to receive medical services when required.
