Agricola Belher and ProFamilia de Jornaleros IAP: Sex Education Workshop

Agricola Belher, together with ProFamilia de Jornaleros IAP from Asociación de Agricultores del Río Culiacán, held a workshop within the framework of the “Young migrants for a healthy and safe sexuality,” focused on sexual education for children in sixth grade and middle school, children of field workers. During the workshop, psychologists Erica Valenzuela and Yessica Urias, from the ProFamilia team, discussed fundamental subjects such as the benefits and methods of birth control, contraceptive methods, and the prevention of pregnancy in teenage years. This activity offered young people a valuable opportunity to gain experience and become informed.
Talking to children and young people about birth control and sexual education is essential because it provides them with tools to make informed decisions about their bodies and health. It helps them understand the importance of healthy relationships and mutual respect, and it also encourages open communication about subjects which are often taboo. It allows them to know their reproductive rights and the options available to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. It also teaches them to recognize and avoid risky situations and empowers them to express their desires and limits in personal relationships.

Addressing these issues properly reduces stigma and misinformation and promotes a culture of respect and responsibility around sexuality, as well as a broader understanding of sexual diversity and different orientations and identities, which contributes to a more inclusive and understanding society.
Ultimately, educating about birth control and sexual education is an investment in both the present and future well-being of young people that prepares them to face the challenges of adult life with confidence and knowledge.
