NOM-017-STPS-2017 has come into force

As of September 28, 2025, the new version of the Mexican Official Standard, which regulates the selection, use, and handling of personal protective equipment (PPE) in all workplaces, will come into force in our country.
While this is a standard that farming companies were already implementing, we now have to adjust to the changes requested by the labor authority.
The changes in the standard are focused on a preventative rather than a reactive approach.
.

.
Below, there is a brief description of the most significant changes:
- More detailed criteria should be considered when selecting a PPE, taking into account the specific risks of each job position, through a more comprehensive risk assessment that includes physical, chemical, biological, and mechanical risk factors, as well as the body parts exposed.
- The employer must ensure that PPEs purchased are compliant with domestic or foreign certifications.
- The staff, including supervisors, must be trained and experienced so that the PEE is effectively used.
- Procedures must be documented describing the proper conservation (cleaning, maintenance, and storage) and final disposal of equipment.
- A table was added at the end to determine the type of PPE to be used, based on risks and anatomical regions.
.

.
Some of these requirements have already been implemented based on other standards from the Ministry of Labor and Social Services (STPS) (for example, the risk assessment of NOM-030-STPS-2009). This amendment provides clarity in the construction of criteria and enforceability based on this same standard.
