Mexican Food Banks

It is a non-profit, non-state CSO (Civil Society Organization) made up by a network of 60 food banks across the country, which rescue food throughout the entire value chain and bring it to families, communities, and institutions.
Around 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year in the world. In Mexico, about 38 tons of food are wasted per minute, which is equal to a third of our food production.
.
Which food are we talking about?
From the farm industry, these are perishable foods, such as fruits and produce, which, due to their appearance, these are not suitable for sale and get discarded, disposed, or used as food for farmyard animals (rezaga or “lagged food”).
.

.
The purpose of food banks is to rescue all these unmarketable foods, preventing their waste and providing it to families facing food insecurity.
There is an increasing number of farmers who are joining this good cause. They understand that they can help get their products to more people, and that these small donations create great benefits for the population.
Many other organizations have also participated, by providing food, counseling, and labor force to develop the activities.

How can you contribute to the food bank?
The process is simpler than we think. Simply call your nearest food bank to arrange the way in which the food delivery or product recollection will be made or learning about other ways to contribute to this worthy cause.
Find your nearest food bank on the official website of Red de Bancos de Alimentos de México (Mexican Food Bank Network)
