At the start of this year, animal-free products on the dinner plate are not the only trendy products; vegan cosmetics are also becoming increasingly popular. Here, market research institutes forecast a growth of up to 3.2 percent for Germany in the next few years. Unlike organic cosmetics, cosmetics derived from plants are completely free of animal ingredients and they are just as good in terms of quality. “Vegan cosmetics meet the same requirements as conventional products. A day care product, for example, provides protection and moisture for the skin,” says Lisa Görk, pharmaceutical technical assistant (PTA) and cosmetician at a pharmacy in Fulda, in health magazine “Apotheken Umschau“.
There are plant-based alternatives for many animal ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is now obtained biotechnologically, for example, from wheat proteins instead of cockscombs, collagen from algae instead of tendons. And for beautiful red lips and fingernails, you no longer have to resort to carmine from scale insects, as you can choose pigments from beetroot.
Watch for incompatibilities when you change over
Sometimes, however, ingredients in vegan cosmetics are not stable and can change over time. Therefore, it is recommended to store the products in a dry, cool and dark place, to use them as quickly as possible and to pay attention to the expiration date.
Lisa Görk’s advice: store eye creams in the refrigerator so that they help even better against puffiness. And: It’s better not to store lipsticks in a warm pocket. The natural waxes and oils can quickly soften. In addition, as with any other cosmetic product, allergies can occur, for example to essential oils. Therefore, the skin should be given time when switching to a new care product.
